London celebrates the world’s biggest city centre triathlon
London Triathlon was the meeting place for the world’s triathletes as they gathered to take on London’s most iconic swim, bike, run challenge.
Participants crossed the start line with an open water swim in the historic Royal Victoria Dock, a bike ride past London’s famous landmarks, and finally a run across the finish line cheered on by hundreds of spectators.
“There aren’t many Triathlons that offer the Olympic distance, so I’m glad I was able to successfully race this distance at the London Triathlon today! The route was tough at times, but the feeling of crossing the finish line to cheering spectators calling my name made it all worthwhile, what a buzz,” said Mia Hawkins, Team GB Triathlete
Participants had the opportunity to support a host of charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH) with 7 challenges across the weekend. From Super Sprint through to the ultimate test of endurance, the ‘Weekend Warrior’ – a challenge to take on as many triathlons as possible on the day!
Over 20 athletes from ethnic minorities aged 16 to 79, most of whom had no swimming experience, completed their first-ever triathlon following months of training as part of Limelight Sports Club’s new initiative with BADU Sports.
The grassroots sports programme aims to empower people through sports and break down barriers* that are traditionally associated with triathlons.
The 2023 London Triathlon will take place on 5-6 August 2023 (subject to final permissions)
