Commission recruitment drive to support growth of cycling

With the 2023 season now underway, British Cycling has launched its latest recruitment drive to find passionate individuals to help grow and shape the future of the sport in Britain.

The eight cycle-sport Commissions play a crucial role in the organisation’s governance, providing expert support and advice to the British Cycling Board and senior management. Each Commission is made up of members from all levels of the sport to ensure a breadth of experience. 

The Commissions were also integral to the development of British Cycling’s long-term plans for each of the cycling disciplines, which were published in 2021. The delivery of these plans continues to tackle barriers to participation and growth, and drive innovation throughout the organisation’s work. 

The voluntary positions provide members with valuable opportunities to extend their personal networks within the sport and can also act as an accessible first step for those with ambitions to explore future opportunities both within British Cycling and the wider world of sports governance.  

All appointments are made by the British Cycling Board, and the Commissions seeking new members at this time include those for BMX Racing, Cycle Speedway, Cyclo-cross, Mountain Bike Endurance, Mountain Bike Gravity, Road and Track. New Chairs are also sought for the BMX Racing and Mountain Bike Endurance Commissions. The term of a Commission member can last from one to three years. 

British Cycling Board Director and Chair of the Sport Commission, Richard Lodge, said: “I encourage all our members who have an interest in advancing the development and governance of a discipline to get in touch and explore joining a Commission. It is a pivotal opportunity to support the next years of growth in our sport.”  

British Cycling’s Acting Cycling Delivery Director, Jonathan Day, said: “Our sport is blessed with so many passionate, knowledgeable and driven people across the cycling disciplines, and supporting our Commissions is a brilliant way to have a real impact on its future sustainability, diversity and growth. 

“We’re keen to receive applications from individuals with a broad range of backgrounds, whether that be as a rider, coach, volunteer or team manager, or those with experience in the media, academia or something else entirely. Whatever your background, if you’re passionate about cycling and want to share your experience and insight for its benefit, we want to hear from you.  

“We know that the past few years have been incredibly challenging for our sport, but its potential continues to shine just as brightly, and there has never been a better or more vital time to get involved.” 

Road Commission Chair, Heather Bamforth, said: “Being involved in the Road Commission gives you an opportunity to help shape the future of the road discipline at a pivotal moment for the sport, as we look to develop our strategy and continue to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.” 

Commissions typically meet twice a year virtually during the working week, and members will occasionally be expected to contribute to specific debates and recommendations through ad hoc meetings or email.
