San Diego Triathlon Challenge brings adaptive athletes together

The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is bringing athletes, supporters and Paralympians together in La Jolla for its annual San Diego Triathlon Challenge weekend.
Taking place from 23 to 25 October, the programme combines the signature triathlon with adaptive sport clinics, community activities and fundraising. CAF expects more than 150 athletes with physical disabilities and 600 fundraising supporters to take part across the weekend.
Access to equipment and training
The programme demonstrates the role of specialist equipment in opening endurance sport to more people. Some participants use racing wheelchairs, handcycles and running prosthetics funded through CAF’s grants and support programmes.
Activities include an adaptive open-water swimming clinic, adaptive surfing, the Tour de Cove, a 5K Walk + Roll and a children’s Run + Roll. The Heroes of Sport Awards also recognise athletes and advocates working to improve access to sport.
More than a single race
For the triathlon community, the event highlights how competition, training opportunities and practical support can work together. Access to equipment, coaching and mentorship can be as important as an individual race entry for athletes facing physical barriers to participation.
The San Diego event is supported by Toyota and forms part of CAF’s wider work to expand participation in sport.
