World Triathlon and HYROX agree strategic partnership for hybrid racing

World Triathlon and HYROX have agreed a strategic partnership that will bring hybrid racing into the international federation’s recognised disciplines, opening new opportunities for events, national federations and athletes.
The organisations have signed a term sheet outlining the proposed operating and governance relationship. A longer-form agreement is still to follow, so the arrangement should not be interpreted as a completed Olympic admission process.
Three formats under development
Hybrid racing combines running with functional fitness exercise. Under the announced framework, competitions will use three formats: Ultimate, reflecting the existing HYROX competition, Fast, a shorter high-intensity version, and Ultra, an extended endurance format.
World Triathlon will sanction and govern the three formats jointly developed with HYROX. HYROX is set to operate official World, Continental and National Championships for elite athletes in the Ultimate format.
Opportunities for national federations
National federations could develop events and age-group championships, potentially extending the reach of triathlon’s existing multisport network. The proposed framework also creates new possibilities for coaches, organisers, clubs and commercial partners engaging with athletes whose interests span running, endurance and gym-based fitness.
Both organisations have identified future Olympic and Paralympic recognition as an ambition. That remains a long-term objective rather than an approved inclusion in either programme.
