Zwift adds Wild Isles roads and running routes to Watopia

Zwift has expanded Watopia with the Wild Isles, giving indoor cyclists and runners a new coastal setting to explore as they plan their next block of training.

The official launch announcement describes three islands inspired by California’s coastline and Catalina Island. Around 17km of new, predominantly flat roads connect the area between the Mayan Jungle and Jarvis Island, including a way to bypass the Jungle.

There are nine cycling routes and three running routes at launch. The running options are Seafoam Scamper, Lightning Lap Run and Lava Legs. Cycling choices include California Dreamin’, Pacific Pursuit and the Watopia 150. Zwift says two groups of islands have been designed with criterium racing in mind.

Fresh routes alongside simpler effort control

The expansion arrives alongside a separate software development that may interest athletes who want to explore without abandoning a planned power target. In its version 1.124 release notes, Zwift introduced Watt Lock, which lets riders select a wattage from the Action Bar and have a compatible trainer manage resistance.

The target can be changed during a ride without first creating a workout. The same release notes confirm that the software rollout to all supported operating systems was completed. That gives athletes a useful distinction when planning a session: route choice can provide the setting, while a separate control determines the effort they intend to hold.

This sits alongside the wider training connections already covered by Triathlon Insight, including HumanGO’s integration with Zwift.

What the expansion offers triathletes

For a triathlete looking at the update, the most useful question is what role a particular route should play in the week. A social ride, a longer solo session and a virtual race each ask something different of the athlete, even when they use the same stretch of digital road.

A new map provides another reason to get on the trainer, but the route’s name or scenery does not define the session. Athletes can decide in advance whether they are joining a group, exploring at their own pace or following a prescribed effort. That makes the expanded choice easier to use without turning every ride into an unplanned competition.

The running routes also give multisport clubs a reason to look beyond the cycling map when discussing online sessions. The immediate opportunity is more choice within a familiar platform: new places to meet, ride and run, with the purpose of the training still set by the athlete or coach.
